Hi all, my 'small' go everywhere Canon G11 died when we were away in Europe, and I am looking at the newer Canon G1X Mark III. Just a go everywhere camera when I don't want to lug my DSLR.
This might sound like a basic question, but can anyone tell me, in plain English, what this means? Does this camera only go to 45mm?

Focal Length 15 – 45 mm (35 mm equivalent: 24 – 72 mm)
Zoom Optical 3x
ZoomPlus 6x
Digital Approx. 4x (with Digital Tele-Converter Approx. 1.6x or 2.0x [1])
Combined Approx. 12x

thanks!

Yes Jill, it only goes to 45mm unless you active the optical and plus zoom. I believe that it's not recommended to use these extra zooms but I guess it depends on how fussy you are about the quality of the image or if it's just more important to capture that moment in the distance.
Cheers Chris

Hi Jill

This page on the Nikon website has an explanation of the difference between optical and digital zoom:

As Chris said, it is probably better to avoid using the digital zoom if possible as the quality of the image deteriorates as the digital zoom increases.

Cheers, Bruce.

Hi Jill, I hesitate to give any technical advice as I am usually the one asking... however I just wanted to share that where they say 35mm equiv. 24-72, that is what they say with my micro 4/3 camera where it is comparing to a full frame camera. So for my 12-100 Olympus lens, it is equivalent to 24-200 on a regular 35mm equiv. full frame camera.
That makes sense to me but it may not be what you are asking!!

thanks everyone. For the moment I am going to see if my G11 can be repaired, and if not claim it on my insurance, and then decide where to go from there.

H Jill
I know this is a very late reply but if you love the G11 buying a one on ebay might be worth considering
